Two May Dance: The Duet
The Concept The title Two May Dance started from the same place as Who Made the Sunset, watching a partner move. I don't always know why my pen leads me back to relationships and women, but there’s something in that connection I can’t ignore. The intro, "Perfect Diction," sets the air: "The more open we are, the more free.
The Mortality "Universal Debt" was born from a social media scroll. I saw a girl speaking about her auntie's funeral and I shed a tear. I sent it to Riz immediately to extract the audio. I wanted to capture a stream of consciousness about how short this life really is. "I came across something, we're all just really nothing... I see a life lived once, and not again." It’s a reminder of the hurt we all owe back eventually.
The Revolution Even in a tape about dancing, I’m on my revolutionary shit. I sampled a lot of Dr. Claude Anderson on this project. I’m always listening to him, trying to order the room for my people while I navigate my own heart.
The Inspiration "Piano and Snare" is a classic for me. I was watching a Tiny Desk performance and the audio moved me so much I had Riz sample it. I started writing the second I heard the loop. It’s one of those records that feels like it was already written in the air; I just had to catch it.
The Reason I ended with "Reason to Smile." It’s about finally finding a girl who changes the frequency. I was driving home, listening to Riz’s beat tape, and the chorus and flow just came to me as a freestyle. As soon as I got home, it was time to put it down.
Two may dance because at the end of the day, we all need someone.
